The United States School Garden Army Poster Print by Edward Penfield

The United States School Garden Army (USSGA) was established in 1917 to promote gardening among school children, aiming to build a more sustainable food system in America. This initiative, supported by the War Department, addressed the urgent food crisis during World War I, emphasizing the importance of local agriculture. President Wilson highlighted that gardening was as noble a contribution to the war effort as any military action, encouraging children to feel connected to the fight for freedom through their gardening efforts.
